Weapons is Zach Cregger’s sophomore horror (don’t talk to me about Miss March) effort after 2022’s Barbarian. I was a huge fan of that one so I saw watched Weapons as soon as I could and it did not disappoint at all.
Cregger expands on the muti-protagonist storytelling style he used in Barbarian my making it a bit more non-linear and it is one of the highlights of the movie. This tactic really helps the pacing by setting up questions in one character’s chapter and then either quickly answering them in the next character’s chapter or letting them linger across multiple.
I want to keep this review as spoiler free as possible since I feel like this is definitely one of those movies where the less you know going in the better but there are so many individual parts that I want to talk about. I’ll compromise by saying the third act does such an incredible job of giving that “what the fuck is this guy talking about” feel while also perfectly encapsulating some of the messages the movie wants to get across.
It’s kind of insane to me to think about the fact that Pedro Pascal was originally cast for Josh Brolin’s character. I’m sure he would have done a fine job but every character in the movie feels perfectly cast. I never saw Ozark but Julia Garner is so good in this that I might have to finally check it out.
Everything in this movie feels so meticulously placed and contributes so much to the tense and mysterious atmosphere. I can’t recommend this movie enough and am so stoked to watch it again. Now if he can make a good Resident Evil movie Zach Cregger is the GOAT I don’t want to hear shit.
9/10
